Recently we, Nexon as a business, were having a rather serious problem in working with credit card processing companies because of our high chargeback ratio. What is a chargeback? Chargeback happens when you, as a credit card user, contact your credit card company and claims 'I didn't buy this product or service'.
Then the merchant, Nexon, in this case, has to prove to the credit card company that the purchase actually happened and was made by the legitimate owner of the credit card. This is relatively easy when delivery of physical goods is made, but for services like Dark Ages, it is tricky, very much time consuming and sometimes difficult to prove.
What happens when chargeback occurs? Not only the credit card processing company takes back our sales money, they charge penalty of about 3 months' Dark Ages subscription amount, and sometimes they lock our sales money for months. You can easily see what chargebacks can do to a business like ours.
While Nexon has been trying very hard to maintain the security of our network and data system, it's been housing relatively simple and convenient credit card approval system, for the convenience of our players, and in an effort to accommodate players from overseas.
But this convenience and easy access also meant Nexon approval system being an easy target for credit card fraud, stolen card numbers, and unauthorized use. As a result, Nexon has been suffering and being victimized tremendously. Recently it has come to a point where the very own existence of Nexon is seriously threatened by this, and the change of our online transaction approval has become an absolute necessity for Nexon to survive.
The reason that I am posting this message is so that our players understand why we had to do what we did, and what will happen.
We are currently evaluating and working on other approval systems. Each system has its own strengths and weaknesses. We plan to bring more more transaction options in our payment system, perhaps one by one, so our players can have choices, convenience and security all at the same time.
So in short, what we have today isn't everything we are going to have. Please be patient with us and help us move forward. Your patience, understanding, and support is appreciated and needed more than ever.
